You all know the Tulsa Beacon, right? It’s the moral and Christian newspaper that is supposed to be so much better than the Tulsa World? Yeah, well, the owner (it’s pretty much a one man shop) got caught using his status as a reporter to get accident reports.

Sounds ok, right? Well then he was selling those reports for to a lawyer, a chiropractic clinic and the “Trinity Restoration” body shop. KOTV contacted all three and got no comment from Bewley Chiropractic or the Bergman Law firm, but the obviously Christian Trinity Restoration says they fired a “woman” for the practice. Right, I guess Eve got them again. Why is it that people and companies that so publicly wrap themselves in the bible so often turn out to be slime?

As for the blatantly fundamentalist Christian biased Tulsa Beacon, owner Charlie Biggs, a former Tulsa World employee also had no comment to KOTV.

I wonder what kind of press this is going to get in the Beacon? They love to publish rumor and one sided stories about the World and politicians they don’t see as their kind (read: right wing Christian) so I wonder what Mr. Biggs is going to have to say about this? Hmm, Is there a woman around somewhere to blame?

I further wonder, all the Christian themed political blogs here in town that are always SO supportive of the Beacon, and his ultimate Christianess Michael DelGiorno that also just loves the Beacon will have to say?

I wonder.

It’s a small scam, but it’s illegal and it’s preying upon the victims of accidents for a profit. Now is that what Jesus would do?

Hello there,
While I know very little about the groups you mention, the phrase the more you talk like Jesus, the less you have to act like Him comes to mind. I hope you know not all Christians are just out for a quick buck, but many of us truly care for what is right.

Not at all, the vast majority of Christians, which are the vast majority of people in this nation, are fine people. But the hard-core fundamentalists that so often claim they are persecuted, that in reality are running this nation right now, are so often such bad hypocrites. And many times they just use their public Christianity for political power.

Which is so odd that they can gain power in this way, because they don’t believe that the vast majority of people in this nation that see themselves as Christian as Christian.

If you are Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, or god forbid Unitarian or really anything other than evangelical and maybe some Baptists are you are all just going to hell, so screw you, unless you want to take Jesus as your personal savior. And then with political power they want everyone to live their lives in their narrow view of morality that they themselves don’t adhere to.

I hadn't heard this story. I'll be interested in keeping up with it, and I'll say what's appropriate about it (if anything) when I know more about it.

The Beacon has done nothing shady or illegal and we have certainly not preyed upon accident victims. If you would like the Beacons official response you can see it here or here.

If there was no wrongdoing and you have no idea why you were named in the suit, why settle? That makes no sense.

You were being sued, if there was no reason for the suit, then ask for an outright dismissal, don't settle. And why have the outcome sealed? Your party is the only one that care about it being sealed.

You settled the case and had the outcome sealed.

Apparently you haven't noticed that more than the Beacon was involved in this. I don't know exactly what happened, or why it was settled or sealed, but the Beacon has done nothing wrong.

From KOTV:

Two Tulsa personal injury attorneys reached a settlement Wednesday after one accused the other of illegally soliciting accident victims for business.

As the News on 6 first told you Tuesday, Attorney Jeff Martin accused the Bergman Law Firm and three other businesses of the activity.

The lawsuit alleged a newspaper called the Tulsa Beacon would buy accident reports and victim information and then share that information with Bergman's lawyers, Trinity Restoration Body Shop and Bewley Chiropractic.

Then it claims callers who convinced an accident victim to sign up with one of those businesses was paid a $25 bonus.

Martin's attorney says the defendants agreed to a permanent injuction shutting down this sort of solicitation.

David Miller of Trinity Restoration says his body shop was dropped from the suit.

The rest of defendants reached a settlement with Martin, the details of which neither side can discuss.

The Beacon was NOT dropped from the suit like the body shop was. Why? The Beacon was liable and did settle.
